Season of Lent--Saturday, April 8

Posted by Tim Collins on OA10er @ 10:17 AM

Saturday, April 8: Read Romans 6:1-14

Prayer guide

  • We confess that too often we behave as though sin were our master. Thank you, dear heavenly Father, for setting us free!

  • O Jesus, take the imperfect sacrifice of our Lenten devotions these past five weeks and redeem it by the power of your Holy Spirit that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name.

Season of Lent--Friday, April 7

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:09 AM

Friday, April 7: Read Matthew 9:14-34

Prayer guide

  • O dear Jesus, you know that we are sometimes simply tired. We want to hope, we want to believe, we want to expect something great, but we are worn down. As you raised the synagogue leader's daughter to life, quicken our faith so we might hope once again.

  • We lift to you those in our congregation who are struggling against chronic illness and whose hope is flagging and pray for your healing and your presence in the darkness.

  • Thank you for your great mercy in bringing our church such vital and gospel-centered preaching!

Season of Lent--Thursday, April 6

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:06 AM

Thursday, April 6: Read Matthew 9:9-13

Prayer guide

  • Lord Jesus, thank you for showing again and again that nothing, not even our sin, will stay you in your pursuit of those you love.

  • O Father, we know in our minds you desire mercy, not sacrifice, but we love the safe feeling of lining up our sacrifices for your approval. Be gentle in weaning us from our misguided ways.

Season of Lent--Wednesday, April 5

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:11 AM

Wednesday, April 5: Read 2 Corinthians 5:11-21

Prayer guide

  • O Lord, we confess that we have cared more about wearing the right thing than about showing mercy, and have judged by the stingy standards of this world those you have died to save.

  • We do not know how to share your gospel, Lord Jesus, but we desire to! Make the gospel in us a burning coal which we cannot hoard any more. Use us to share your fire with this cold world.

  • O Spirit, in this desert of Lent we cannot hide from our sins; they are always before us. “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61:10)

Season of Lent--Tuesday, April 4

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:20 AM

Tuesday, April 4: Read Psalm 33

Prayer guide

  • You have walked with our church faithfully for so many decades, Father. We humbly give our goals for our church, our hopes, our dreams and our very selves to you. Grant us in your mercy that we might glorify you with single-minded devotion to you.

  • We know, Jesus, that trust is meaningless unless there is something to lose. We care about our church! We care about the ministries you've called us to! We care about the family which you knit with your gospel! Help us in this time of transition to trust you. “In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.”

  • Spirit of the living God, you know the secret sins which bind us in shame and fear and self-loathing. We lift to you especially those in our church who are caught in webs of lust and pornographic thoughts. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

Season of Lent--Monday, April 3

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:23 AM

Monday, April 3: Read Hebrews 13:11-14

Prayer guide

  • This Lent we seek to simplify our lives, entering the desert so we may better hear your voice. In doing so, we try not to care about how the world sees us. Father, we gladly trade the honor of the world for the disgrace of Jesus which belongs to the true followers of the Son.

  • Lord Jesus, today lead us by your grace to someone who needs to hear your word of hope, and by the power of your Spirit speak through us words of healing.

  • We lift to you those in this country who live in fear because of the color of their skin. Heal the soul of this country by your gospel, God of truth, for only in your Son can we truly be whole.

Season of Lent--Sunday, April 2

Posted by Tim Collins on OA8er @ 8:36 AM

Fifth Sunday in Lent, April 2: Read Ezekiel 37:1-14

Prayer guide

  • Why should you help us, O Lord? Why should you gather our bones and breathe life into us? Thank you, Father, for your unfailing, unmerited, unimaginable love.

  • Jesus, so often you taught through questions. Please give us discernment to hear the questions you are asking each of us.

  • It has been over a month since our Haiti team broke bread alongside our brothers and sisters there. By your Spirit, bless not only their ministries but their very lives. Breathe life-giving hope into their community and never let us forget them.

Season of Lent--Saturday, April 1

Posted by Tim Collins on OA11er @ 11:40 AM

Saturday, April 1: Read Hebrews 12:1-13

Prayer guide

  • Loving Father, please help us to run the race with perseverance; we cannot do it on our own strength. Remind us that Jesus has already conquered sin and death.

  • We humbly ask that the pain of hardship would turn to joy as it yields a “harvest of righteousness and peace” (v. 11). Help us to then use these experiences to encourage others.

  • Give special perseverance and discernment to those serving on the pastoral search committee. Let their efforts bear fruit. Bless too the efforts of the other search committee for an organist and a music director.

Season of Lent--Friday, March 31

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:09 AM

Friday, March 31: Read Hebrews 4

Prayer guide

  • God, we confess that we often let the busyness of our lives interfere with the refreshment you would offer us. Help us to set aside time to rest and remember that Jesus is our Sabbath.

  • Thank you for those in our congregation who take on responsibilities to make our worship together possible: those in the sound room, those providing music or children’s messages, those who preach and those who hand out bulletins. Bless everyone richly who serves you in these ways, and let their efforts bear fruit.

  • We pray that we as a church would be filled with the desire to reach out to neighbors and strangers alike, drawing them into fellowship with you!

Season of Lent--Thursday, March 30

Posted by Tim Collins on OA7er @ 7:04 AM

Thursday, March 30: Read Hebrews 3

Prayer guide

  • We confess, gracious God, that our hearts tend to go astray all too easily, “hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (v. 13). Forgive us; soften our hearts. Fix our thoughts on Jesus that we may share in his inheritance.

  • We thank you for the example of long faithfulness found in our elderly brothers and sisters! Bless and encourage them as they face the challenges unique to aging, and help us to visit and support them faithfully.
